A few days ago I was browsing social media and came across a sponsored advertisement from [REDACTED] , a european security & bodyguard training association. The post boasted about special operations officers from [REDACTED] providing firearms training on various techniques including: Natural Shooting Position, Instinctive Shooting, Manipulation and other ‘special’ techniques. You can see where I was intrigued here… Actually I was more disappointed by the fact that this company is supposedly the leading organization in the region….
Every time I hear a student tell me: “This position doesn’t feel comfortable or this position doesn’t feel natural”, I tell them: GOOD! There is absolutely NOTHING natural or instinctive about shooting.
The human body was never designed to use firearms – these weapons are foreign TO US, therefore creating a necessity to adapt. Instinct is an interesting choice of word because it implies ‘natural’ which I just covered. The reason we train so often in these adapted fighting stances is to develop a comfort level based upon the configuration of your weapon system. Whether you’re sitting a carbine in the pocket of your shoulder or drawing a handgun from a concealed carry holster, these skills require adaptation and building muscle memory.
If you feel like you’re in a ‘natural’ position, the chances are extremely likely that you do NOT have a stable shooting platform beneath your shoulders.
The point is, for all of you instructors out there: Stop saying natural stance or instinctive shooting. IT DOES NOT EXIST!
These are terms used in unprofessional circles and if I were attending a firearms course, and the instructor started talking about ‘natural stance’ I’d demand my money back and walk out of there immediately.
Students, if you hear an instructor tell you to use your instincts and find a natural stance, chances are you instructor has NO IDEA what he or she is doing. You’re better off booking one of our courses!
Our instructors will guide and coach you on developing a proper fighting stance, mobility and maintaining your biomechanics while shooting.
BUT DON’T TAKE IT FROM ME, HEAR WHAT A UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS SPECIAL FORCES OPERATOR HAS TO SAY!
